Human Rights Organizations Urge Action Against Taliban Impunity on World Day of Criminal Justice

On the occasion of World Day of Criminal Justice, several human rights organizations from Afghanistan and abroad released a joint statement, initiated by the Tolerance Institute, urging the international community to take immediate, coordinated, and effective actions to end the impunity of human rights violators in Afghanistan. The statement highlights that the lack of accountability has emboldened the Taliban in continuing their repressive policies, affirming that the deprivation of women and girls from education, work, and participation in public life is a blatant violation of international law.

Joint Statement on World Day of Criminal Justice

This statement, published by the Tolerance Institute, emphasizes that nearly five years after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, the absence of accountability and legal follow-up has made this group more audacious in its repressive policies and violations of the fundamental rights of the residents.

The signatories of this statement assert that continued impunity has enabled ongoing human rights violations and has obstructed justice for the victims.

Deprivation of Women and Girls’ Fundamental Rights

The organizations endorsing the statement regard the exclusion of women and girls from education, work, and public life as a clear breach of international law. They emphasize that these restrictions should be seen as part of systematic repression policies. As detailed in a recent report, UN Report Uncovers Disturbing Violence Against Women in Afghanistan Under Taliban Rule, these violations continue to escalate.

The statement also indicates that without achieving justice, sustainable peace and stability in Afghanistan will not be possible.

Call for Conditional Engagement with the Taliban

Furthermore, the statement requests the international community to condition any engagement with the Taliban on measurable progress in upholding human rights, accountability, and respect for the fundamental rights of the residents, particularly women and girls. Global Leaders continue to urge action as highlighted in Global Leaders Urge Action Against Gender Apartheid in Afghan Education Crisis.

The signatories stress that coordinated and effective action from the global community can help end the cycle of impunity and strengthen accountability in Afghanistan.
