Pakistan Doubts Taliban’s Commitment to Curbing TTP Activities Amid Ongoing Tensions

Pakistani officials have concluded that the Taliban’s efforts to limit the activities of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have been significantly ineffective, and tensions between the two countries persist.

The Taliban’s Actions Against TTP Seen as Insufficient in Pakistan

Pakistan’s officials have determined that the Taliban’s initiatives in Afghanistan to curb the activities of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have had little impact, and conflicts between the two nations continue unabated. The newspaper ‘Dawn’ reported that on Friday (September 13), Taliban officials relocated certain TTP militants and their families from border areas to other regions, instructing them to cease their attacks in Pakistan.

However, recent reports indicate that ongoing clashes along the Durand Line reflect the sustained military activities of this group. Sami Yousafzai, a journalist and analyst on Afghan and Pakistani affairs, asserts that substantial changes in the relationship between the Taliban regime and Pakistan are unlikely, as Pakistan’s concerns, outlined over the past year, remain unaddressed.

TTP’s Expansion in Pakistan

Yousafzai emphasizes that the TTP has gained increasing influence within Pakistan over time, extending its reach to areas around Peshawar, Bannu, and Kohat. He notes that while some TTP commanders have been detained or placed under surveillance by the Taliban, most have fled into Pakistan. According to him, Pakistani officials believe that the Taliban’s recent actions represent a policy shift, yet these measures have yet to significantly enhance security in Pakistan.

The Pakistan Army has reported that security forces killed 15 militants attempting to enter Pakistan from Afghanistan in North Waziristan, identified as TTP elements. Pakistan has urged the Taliban government to take effective steps to prevent attacks on its territory from Afghan soil.

China’s Efforts to Improve Relations Between Kabul and Islamabad

Following the end of a ceasefire with Islamabad in late 2022, the TTP has escalated its attacks against security forces in Pakistan, claiming responsibility for numerous assaults in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces. In this context, Pakistan has welcomed China’s efforts to improve relations between Kabul and Islamabad, with Beijing seeking to facilitate dialogues between the two neighbors.

Meanwhile, the newspaper ‘The Nation’ reported that Pakistan’s envoy in Kabul has been summoned back to Islamabad to discuss recent developments in Afghanistan and the broader region. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has stressed the importance of monitoring regional developments that could impact peace and security.
