Pakistan Questions Taliban’s Commitment to Curb TTP Activities Amid Ongoing Tensions

Pakistani officials have concluded that the Taliban’s efforts to curb the activities of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have had little effect, with tensions between the two nations continuing unabated.

Pakistan: Taliban Actions Against TTP Proving Insufficient

Pakistani officials have assessed that the Taliban’s attempts in Afghanistan to limit the operations of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have been largely ineffective, as conflicts persist. According to the newspaper ‘Dawn’, Taliban authorities have relocated some TTP fighters and their families from border areas to other regions and instructed them to halt their attacks in Pakistan.

Nevertheless, recent reports highlight ongoing clashes along the Durand Line, underscoring the continued armed activities of this group. Sami Yousafzai, a journalist and analyst focusing on Afghanistan and Pakistan, states that no significant changes are expected in the relationship between the Taliban regime and Pakistan, as Pakistan’s demands have remained consistent over the past year.

Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan Expanding

Yousafzai emphasizes that the TTP has gained increasing influence in Pakistan over time, with their controlled areas extending around Peshawar, Bannu, and Kohat. He notes that while some TTP commanders have been detained or monitored by the Taliban, most have fled back to Pakistan. According to him, Pakistani officials believe that the Taliban’s recent measures indicate a shift in policy, but they have not demonstrated a significant impact on security within Pakistan.

Pakistan’s military has announced the killing of 15 fighters attempting to infiltrate from Afghanistan into North Waziristan, identifying these individuals as TTP elements. Pakistan has urged the Taliban government to take effective action to prevent attacks against Pakistan from Afghan territory.

China’s Efforts to Improve Relations Between Kabul and Islamabad

Since the end of the ceasefire with Islamabad in late 2022, the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan has ramped up its attacks against security forces in Pakistan. The group has claimed responsibility for numerous assaults in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan regions. Amidst this situation, Pakistan has welcomed China’s efforts to foster better relations between Kabul and Islamabad, with Beijing working to facilitate dialogue between the two neighboring countries.

Meanwhile, the newspaper ‘Nation’ has reported that Pakistan’s representative in Kabul has been summoned back to Islamabad to discuss the latest developments in Afghanistan and the region. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has emphasized the importance of monitoring regional dynamics that could impact peace and security.
