The head of the Afghan Red Crescent Society announced the imminent opening of a specialized hospital in Kabul, dedicated to providing free treatment for approximately two thousand children suffering from heart defects annually.
Efforts to improve the health sector and access to quality healthcare services in Afghanistan have entered a new phase. Sheikh Shahabuddin Delawar, the head of the Afghan Red Crescent Society, revealed in a media interview that a fully equipped and specialized hospital for cardiac patients will soon be inaugurated in Kabul. According to Delawar, the facility will have the capacity to perform surgeries and treat nearly two thousand children with heart defects each year. He emphasized that all diagnostic and medical services at this specialized hospital will be offered completely free of charge to residents, although he did not provide specific details regarding the exact opening date of the center.
This new initiative by the Afghan Red Crescent comes in the wake of various programs previously launched by the organization to save the lives of children affected by this critical condition. In past years, many children suffering from heart defects have been referred to different hospitals within the capital, receiving surgical treatment and care. However, the lack of a centralized, specialized government facility has always posed a significant challenge within the public health sector. With the establishment of this new hospital, a substantial burden will be lifted from private hospitals and families in need.
Heart defects among children represent a serious health dilemma in Afghanistan, imposing heavy financial burdens on families for treatment. Due to the inadequate advanced medical facilities within the country, many of these children and other patients with critical illnesses have been referred abroad for specialized care over the years. In this context, the Peace Village Foundation from Germany has played a significant role, facilitating the transfer, hospitalization, and free treatment of hundreds of Afghan children in advanced German hospitals. With the activation of the new hospital in Kabul, it is anticipated that the need for patient referrals overseas will significantly decrease.
