Punjab’s Security Threats: Chief Minister Points to Neighboring States

The Punjab Province Faces Threats from Neighboring Regions

During an event in Lahore, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz remarked that Punjab is encountering greater security challenges from adjacent provinces than from neighboring nations. She clarified that the threats the province faces are less about foreign adversaries and more about issues stemming from nearby states.

Maryam emphasized that terrorism mainly infiltrates Punjab from these bordering regions, but she remains optimistic about the province’s security despite these challenges. She noted, “The threats we are confronting arise from all of our provincial borders.” Additionally, she shared positive news about improvements in law and order in Punjab since the new government took office in 2024.

Security Challenges and Political Reactions

Maryam Nawaz also identified organized crime and religious intolerance as serious challenges facing Punjab. Meanwhile, Waqas Akram, the spokesperson for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, fiercely criticized Maryam’s comments, labeling security in Pakistan as a national issue that demands cooperation among all provinces, insisting that one province’s security should not be pitted against another’s.

These remarks from Maryam Nawaz come at a time when Pakistan consistently blames India and the Taliban for creating instability, particularly in the provinces of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, Afghan officials have consistently rejected these accusations, asserting that Pakistan’s internal security problems are primarily due to domestic factors.
