Congresswoman Nancy Mace has labeled the Taliban as insurgents, warning against the dangers of legitimizing their authority. She also announced the introduction of new legislation that will formally recognize the Taliban as an insurgent organization.

In a post shared on X, Congresswoman Nancy Mace referred to the Taliban as “insurgents.” She emphasized that efforts to legitimize the Taliban regime must cease immediately, warning that such actions could lead to dire consequences.

Proposed Legislation to Prevent Taliban Legitimacy

The representative announced a new initiative called the “Preventing the Legitimization of Insurgent Governments Act.” This legislation formally identifies the Taliban as a foreign insurgent organization and designates them as a “state sponsor of terrorism.” Furthermore, federal agencies will be prohibited from recognizing the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

Consequences of Legitimizing the Taliban

Mace also addressed U.S. foreign policy, stating, “We have realized that sending mixed messages to our enemies results in negative outcomes. The U.S. must never legitimize insurgents or terrorism.” She noted that this legislation had previously been introduced in the Congressional session of 1404 but had not passed.

Congressional Procedures and Bill Progress

According to U.S. Congressional rules, any bill that does not receive final approval from both chambers within a two-year period will be removed from consideration, causing concerns regarding the future of proposals related to the Taliban.
