Nancy Mace Pushes to Officially Label Taliban as Rebels Through New Legislation

Nancy Mace, a U.S. Representative, has labeled the Taliban as a rebel group and warned against the risks of legitimizing them. She also announced a new legislative proposal aimed at officially designating the Taliban as a rebel organization.

In a post shared on X, Representative Nancy Mace described the Taliban as a “rebel group.” She emphasized that efforts to legitimize the Taliban’s governance must be completely halted, as such actions could have dangerous consequences.

The Bill to Prevent Taliban Legitimization

Mace revealed that a new proposal titled the “Bill to Prevent the Legitimization of Rebel Governments” has been introduced. This bill formally recognizes the Taliban as a foreign rebel organization and categorizes their regime as a “state sponsor of terrorism.” Additionally, federal agencies would be prohibited from legitimizing the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

The Consequences of Legitimizing the Taliban

Mace also addressed U.S. foreign policy, stating, “We have learned that when America sends conflicting messages to its adversaries, it results in negative outcomes. America must never legitimize rebels or terrorism.” She noted that this proposal was previously presented to Congress in the 1404 legislative session but failed to pass.

Congressional Regulations and Bill Process

According to U.S. congressional rules, any proposal or bill that does not receive final approval from both chambers within a two-year period is removed from the agenda, resulting in its automatic expiration. This raises concerns regarding the fate of legislation related to the Taliban.
