Short Link:Khan Jan Alkozai, a senior member of the Chamber of Commerce and Investment, has reported on an unprecedented move by the United Arab Emirates to block transit routes for Afghan traders.
Officials at Jebel Ali Port in Dubai have officially halted the loading and transfer of containers belonging to Afghanistan headed for Iranian ports, including Bandar Abbas and Chabahar. This development, rooted in regional geopolitical tensions, has placed the country’s trading network in a precarious state.
Current reports indicate that approximately 3,000 containers are stranded at docks in Dubai, unable to proceed toward Iranian waters. These goods were previously diverted to Dubai due to significant tax issues and widespread seizures at Karachi Port in Pakistan, and are now facing yet another blockade. The UAE has instructed traders to reroute their goods to any destination other than Iran, a directive that has pushed many businesspeople towards the brink of bankruptcy due to exorbitant transportation costs.
The Chamber of Commerce has urged authorities in Kabul to promptly engage in diplomatic negotiations with the UAE to resolve this transit deadlock, warning of impending price increases in domestic markets if the situation persists. Concerns about the economic impact are heightened, especially as Middle East conflicts continue to drive food prices skyward in Afghanistan.
