زن 550x295 - UN Report: Taliban's Arrests of Women and Girls Highlight Ongoing Human Rights Violations in Afghanistan

The United Nations has announced in its latest report that the Taliban arrested dozens of women and girls in Kabul over three days in July for allegedly not adhering to the hijab. UNAMA has deemed this act an obvious violation of human rights and an example of systematic discrimination against women… The United Nations reported on the arbitrary detention of dozens of Afghan women and girls by Taliban forces in Kabul. According to this report, from July 16 to July 19 this year, more than sixty women and girls were arrested by the Taliban on charges of failing to adhere to the hijab. The findings of this report, prepared by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), show that the detained women spent from several hours to one night in Taliban custody.

Signing a Commitment for the Release of Women

UNAMA stated that the families of these women’s husbands were forced to sign written commitments for the release of their relatives. The report indicates that this process was carried out arbitrarily and without following legal procedures.

Increased Restrictions on Women After Taliban’s Return

Since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, they have imposed extensive restrictions on women’s lives, including prohibiting work in government and non-governmental institutions and depriving girls of education after the sixth grade.

International Community’s Reaction

While the Taliban government claims its laws are based on Islamic Sharia principles, international human rights organizations, including the United Nations, have described these actions as systematic discrimination against Afghan women.

Concerns About Continued Human Rights Violations

UNAMA’s report emphasizes that the human rights situation in Afghanistan is severely alarming, and the increasing restrictions against women and girls have put their future at serious risk.
