Russia Accuses U.S. of Manipulating Afghanistan War for Political Gain

Sergey Lavrov, the Foreign Minister of Russia, stated in an interview that the United States has exploited the war in Afghanistan to fulfill its political ambitions following the September 11 attacks.

In an interview with the RBC news network, Lavrov asserted that the United States has taken advantage of global solidarity and the UN resolution that authorized military actions and the formation of an international coalition to advance its political objectives and expand its influence.

When questioned about Russia’s covert assistance to the U.S. at the onset of the war, Lavrov noted that the Russia-NATO Council had approved a comprehensive plan concerning Afghanistan. Consequently, Russia provided its helicopters to the U.S.-led coalition and established information-sharing coordination between the two sides.

Tensions in U.S.-Russia Relations

He also highlighted the deterioration of relations between Washington and Moscow, emphasizing that the U.S. utilized this solidarity and resolution primarily to achieve its political goals rather than merely to combat terrorism.

Alexei Chevtsoff, a deputy at the Russian Security Council, recently remarked that Western countries are seeking to establish military infrastructure in Central Asia by exaggerating security threats from Afghanistan.

This Russian official stressed that ongoing security concerns about Afghanistan are a tool used by the West to justify an increased military and security presence in the region.
