Taliban and Pakistan Engage in Diplomatic Talks in China

Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s Foreign Minister, has announced that negotiations between the group’s representatives and Pakistani officials are currently underway in Urumqi, China. He emphasized the importance of resolving issues through consensus, while asserting that the Taliban reserves its right to defend its territorial integrity alongside its openness to dialogue.

Confirmation of Ongoing Talks

During a consultative dialogue session on Afghanistan and Central Asia in Kabul, Amir Khan Muttaqi officially confirmed that bilateral talks between Taliban and Pakistani delegations have been taking place in Urumqi, People’s Republic of China. He stated that the group is participating in these discussions with a sincere approach aimed at finding solutions to the existing challenges in the relations between the two countries.

Emphasis on Understanding and National Sovereignty

The Taliban Foreign Minister highlighted that Kabul’s foundational policy is based on resolving challenges through dialogue and fostering relationships grounded in mutual respect and understanding. However, he firmly added that despite prioritizing diplomatic avenues, the Taliban government will not waver in its commitment to protect Afghanistan’s territorial integrity and uphold the rights of its people, maintaining its right to legitimate self-defense.

Lack of Information on Negotiation Details

Reports indicate that this round of discussions began last Thursday in China. Despite the significance of the gathering, neither side has disclosed specific details regarding the topics under discussion or any potential progress made. China’s role as the host for these negotiations reflects its increasing efforts to alleviate the mounting border and security tensions between Kabul and Islamabad that have escalated in recent months. Additionally, China urges Taliban to enhance border security after recent incidents, highlighting the challenges both nations face.

Pakistan’s Stance

On the other side, Tahir Andrabi, a spokesperson for the Pakistani Foreign Ministry, emphasized that the primary objective of Islamabad in these talks is to convey serious security concerns to the other party. He underscored that the ball is now in the Taliban’s court and that the main responsibility for advancing the peace process and maintaining dialogues lies with the Kabul authorities. These statements underline Pakistan’s high expectations regarding the confrontation with armed groups opposing its interests on Afghan soil.
