The senior spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate has criticized the five-year record of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), deeming the organization ineffective in establishing a constructive bridge between Kabul and the international community. He called for a renewed focus on core diplomatic missions…
Zabihullah Mujahid, the senior spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, has openly criticized the five-year performance of the UNAMA, stating that this international body has failed to play a significant role in fostering understanding, structural communication, and mediation between Afghanistan and the global community. During an interview with the media, Mujahid emphasized that UNAMA has focused more on peripheral issues in recent years, failing to fulfill its main commitment of facilitating dialogue.
The spokesperson underscored that UNAMA’s fundamental duty is to act as a positive and reformative bridge between the United Nations, the global community, and the governing body in Afghanistan, thereby fostering closer bilateral relations. He expressed expectations that the organization would work to diminish the diplomatic rifts, particularly with Western countries. Mujahid expressed hope that in the coming year, UNAMA would enhance its efforts to address major issues and play a more active role in improving the country’s foreign relations.
These criticisms come as the United Nations Security Council passed a new resolution last month, extending UNAMA’s political mission in Afghanistan until June 17, 2027. Part of the international resolution stresses the necessity for this organization to facilitate constructive dialogues among the Islamic Emirate, regional countries, the international community, and various segments of civil society.
According to the resolution issued from New York, UNAMA is tasked with paving the way for comprehensive negotiations between Kabul and other interested parties through relevant assemblies and mechanisms under its oversight, including coordination with special representatives and international envoys of participating countries in Afghanistan’s affairs. The UN Security Council has indicated that the ultimate goal of these diplomatic engagements is to assist Afghanistan in fully adhering to international commitments and ensuring the necessary frameworks for the country’s complete reintegration into the global community.
