Afghan Artists Struggle Amid Taliban’s Cultural Restrictions

The return of the Taliban to power has severely impacted the lives of Afghan artists, subjecting them to stringent restrictions and economic hardships. Many are now grappling with significant challenges in meeting their basic living expenses.

Struggles of Afghan Artists After Music Ban

Since the Taliban regained control in 2021, the artistic landscape for Afghan creators has drastically transformed. The imposition of limitations and outright bans on artistic expression has rendered their lives increasingly difficult. Those who spent years bringing joy to the people through music and art now face serious economic challenges.

A local artist with nearly fifty years of experience in music shared with Radio Free Europe, “My biggest concern now is finding bread for my family. The days when people invited me to perform are long gone. Now, I ponder how to afford food.” He highlighted the financial strains caused by the ban on music, which has left many without support.

Significant Challenges Faced by Artists

This artist revealed that despite reaching retirement age, he has not received his pension over the past five years and is forced to seek other employment. “Finding a job at this age and under these conditions is incredibly difficult—it has often left me feeling helpless and in tears.” He mentioned daily struggles, saying, “All we want is to put food on the table, but even acquiring a simple meal presents hurdles.”

Another artist echoed these sentiments, stating, “Hundreds of other artists are living in poverty and financial distress. We are forced to borrow money and constantly strive to feed our families every day.”

The Situation for Artists and the Need for Support

With the Taliban’s declaration of music as forbidden and its practice banned, many artists have entered a state of crisis. Some have considered fleeing Afghanistan, yet they still encounter economic and social challenges in other countries as well.

Cultural activists abroad believe that the situation for artists in Afghanistan requires serious attention. Shahpur Sadqat, a prominent figure in this sector, remarked, “We must provide financial aid and job opportunities for both migrants and artists within the country.” He emphasized the necessity of creating avenues for these artists to engage in their craft.

For artists who have dedicated their lives to music over the years, the recent restrictions signify a loss of their occupation and income source, leaving them in pursuit of ways to sustain their livelihoods.
