Taliban Officials Reflect on U.S. Withdrawal as Symbol of Afghan Resilience

On the fifth anniversary of the departure of the last American soldier from Afghanistan, two Taliban officials discussed the ongoing repercussions of the U.S. defeat and the triumph of the Afghan people. They emphasized that the presence of foreign forces over the past 20 years has never enjoyed popular support.

Taliban: U.S. Still Shocked by Defeat in Afghanistan

In a message posted on social media to mark the fifth anniversary of the historic withdrawal, Enamullah Samangani, head of the Information and Culture Ministry of the Taliban, asserted that the United States has yet to recover from the consequences of its defeat in Afghanistan. The last American soldier left the country on August 31, 2021, marking the end of a 20-year military presence.

Without naming specific individuals or groups, he mentioned that there are still some people attempting to return to Afghanistan and reintegrate into its political structure. Samangani stated: “While the U.S. continues to grapple with the fallout from its defeat, certain individuals remain caught up in dreams of returning to power and participating in the charade of the republic. They are oblivious to the fact that the U.S. and its republic were mocked.”

Mujahed: Afghans Defeated the U.S. and NATO through Sacrifice and Struggle

Meanwhile, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban’s chief spokesperson, remarked on the anniversary that Afghans have succeeded in defeating the U.S. and NATO thanks to their own efforts and sacrifices. He described this day as one of pride for the Afghan people and reiterated that the presence of foreign troops over the last two decades has never been supported by the populace.

These remarks from Taliban officials clearly reflect their perception of achievements following the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan, emphasizing that the resilience of the Afghan struggle has significantly contributed to this victory.
