UN Human Rights Chief Calls for Urgent Action to Protect Afghan Women’s Rights

Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has called for an end to discrimination against Afghan women. He emphasized that the Taliban’s policies hinder the realization of women’s fundamental rights and the progress of society.

Criticism of Taliban’s Treatment of Women

Volker Turk warned the Taliban to halt their discriminatory policies against Afghan women and girls. Speaking at a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, he urged Taliban authorities to revoke decrees and policies that criminalize the presence of women in society.

He stated, “Once again, I urge the ruling authorities in Afghanistan to amend these incorrect policies that challenge women’s presence.”

Ongoing Suppression of Women’s Rights

Since the Taliban regained power in August 2021, severe restrictions have been imposed on women’s education and employment. Girls have been banned from attending school beyond sixth grade, and universities and higher education institutions have been closed to them. Additionally, women’s movement has been severely restricted, and their participation in government institutions has dwindled.

In September 2025, the Taliban prohibited Afghan women from working in UN offices, resulting in hundreds of female employees being forced to stay at home.

Everyday Challenges Faced by Afghan Women

A 28-year-old woman, who worked for a UN-affiliated organization for ten years, says she has now lost her job and income and is facing family difficulties. She emphasizes that many women are heads of households and cannot rely on a male guardian.

Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, also expressed regret over the continued anti-women policies in Afghanistan, calling these actions a clear violation of human rights. He demanded the immediate lifting of the ban on women working in UN offices and assured their access to job opportunities.
