The Afghan consulate in Karachi has announced the release of dozens of Afghan citizens, including women and children, from prisons in Pakistan’s Sindh province, as well as their safe return to the homeland. According to official statements, the release of additional Afghan detainees is expected to continue in the coming days…
Abdul Jabbar Takharai, the acting consul of Afghanistan in Karachi, shared a video on the official social media page of the diplomatic mission, confirming that a group of Afghan refugees has been freed from Sindh prisons. He noted that these individuals, including women and children, have returned to Afghanistan through the Spin Boldak-Chaman border following their release.
The consul stated that the detainees had been held for about a month, but did not provide specific details regarding the charges against them. Nevertheless, reports indicate a significant increase in the detention and deportation of migrants without legal residency papers by the Pakistani government in recent months, as highlighted in Escalating Deportations of Afghan Nationals from Pakistan: A Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds.
In his remarks, the acting consul revealed that 105 other Afghan nationals are still incarcerated in Pakistani jails. He assured that with ongoing coordination efforts, these individuals are also expected to be released and repatriated to Afghanistan within the next two days.
The issue of Afghan detainees extends beyond Pakistan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has previously reported progress in securing the release of its citizens worldwide. Recently, 14 Afghan nationals were released from prisons in Azerbaijan, and over 100 others from the United Arab Emirates, highlighting the ongoing legal advocacy for migrants in the region, similar to the complexities discussed in Kabul Prepares Dossier Accusing Pakistan of Supporting Terrorism and Violating Human Rights.
