As part of its “Rewards for Justice” program, the U.S. Department of State has set multi-million dollar rewards for information leading to the identification or capture of two senior leaders of ISIS-Khorasan. The total rewards amount to $18 million and are aimed at combating the threats posed by this terrorist group in Afghanistan.

Specific Rewards for ISIS Leaders

According to official information, a reward of up to $8 million has been offered for information leading to the identification of “Sanaullah Ghafari,” also known as “Shahab al-Muhajir,” who serves as the leader of ISIS-Khorasan. He has been active in this role since 2020 and is accused of financing and overseeing the operations of this group. For information regarding “Obaidullah,” another leader and the financial officer of ISIS-Khorasan, a reward of up to $10 million has been set.

Political Concerns and Security Challenges

This announcement of rewards comes amid claims from some political figures in Afghanistan and neighboring countries accusing the U.S. of bolstering or exploiting ISIS-Khorasan against the Taliban. Notably, former parliament member Tahir Qadir has raised this issue repeatedly. Russia has also consistently warned of ISIS-Khorasan’s activities in Afghanistan, labeling it a significant threat to regional security.

Taliban’s Stance on Security Threats

In recent statements, Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesperson for the Taliban government, reacted to the concerns raised by members of the United Nations Security Council and dismissed them. He emphasized that no armed group is allowed to operate in Afghanistan and that the security situation in the country is fully under the control of the Taliban. Mujahid also noted that ISIS in Afghanistan is “completely suppressed” and stated that the group’s safe havens have been eliminated.
