The U.S. State Department has announced a total reward of $18 million for information leading to the identification of two senior leaders of ISIS-Khorasan. This initiative underscores growing concerns regarding the threats posed by this group in Afghanistan.

U.S. Offers Substantial Rewards for Identifying ISIS-K Leaders

The U.S. State Department, as part of its “Rewards for Justice” program, has established several million-dollar rewards for information that could lead to the identification or capture of two high-ranking officials from ISIS-Khorasan. These rewards total $18 million and aim to combat the threats posed by this terrorist organization in Afghanistan.

Specific Rewards for ISIS Leaders

According to official sources, a reward of up to $8 million is being offered for information leading to the identification of Sonullah Ghaffari, known as Shahab al-Muhajir, who is recognized as the leader of ISIS-Khorasan. He has been in this position since 2020 and is accused of financing and managing the group’s operations. Additionally, a reward of up to $10 million is designated for information regarding Ubaidullah, another senior leader and financial officer of ISIS-Khorasan.

Political Concerns and Security Challenges

The announcement of these rewards comes amid accusations from certain political figures in Afghanistan and neighboring countries, claiming that the U.S. is reinforcing or exploiting ISIS-Khorasan against the Taliban. Notably, former parliamentary representative Tahir Qadir has repeatedly raised this issue. Russia has also consistently warned about the activities of ISIS-Khorasan in Afghanistan, deeming it a significant threat to regional security.

Taliban’s Position on Security Threats

In recent statements, Zabiullah Mujahid, the chief spokesman for the Taliban government, responded to concerns raised by members of the United Nations Security Council, rejecting these concerns. He emphasized that no armed groups are allowed to operate in Afghanistan and that the country’s security situation is under the complete control of the Taliban. Mujahid also noted that ISIS in Afghanistan has been “completely suppressed,” and the group’s safe havens have been eliminated.
