Reactions and Analysis of the Taliban Delegation’s Visit

It appears that additional content relating to the Taliban delegation’s visit may have been deleted from the website of the Belarus National Academy of Sciences. Several photos initially published were widely shared online. Analysts have noted the irony that this Taliban delegation, known for its oppressive policies against women in Afghanistan, was seen listening to Belarusian women discussing food and infant formula. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the Belarusian opposition leader, described these images as emblematic of the hypocrisy of Belarusian officials.

Belarus and Taliban Relations

Tsikhanouskaya remarked, “This regime labels Belarusian journalists and activists as extremists on the one hand, but quietly meets with the Taliban on the other.” Some Belarusians have pointed out similarities in appearance between Taliban members and the Mujahideen who fought against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. This visit comes at a time when Belarus is reassessing its diplomatic relations with various countries.
