UN Officials Urge Investment in Sustainable Livelihoods for Afghan Communities

The acting head of the United Nations Mission in Afghanistan highlighted the critical need for investing in alternative livelihoods during a visit to Badakhshan, where she also addressed challenges faced by women and farmers.

UNAMA’s Emphasis on Creating Alternative Livelihoods

In a recent trip to Badakhshan, Georgette Gagnon, the acting head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), underscored the importance of increasing investment in sustainable and alternative livelihood opportunities. During her visit, Gagnon met with local Taliban officials, tribal elders, and civil society representatives to discuss the living conditions of the people, focusing particularly on the challenges encountered by women.

Gagnon also engaged with several women entrepreneurs in Faizabad and toured a rehabilitation center for drug addicts supported by the United Nations. She stressed the urgent need for increased investment in areas where communities have suffered economically due to the ban on opium cultivation.

Criticism of Insufficient International Support

Abdul Salam Hanafi, the Deputy Minister of the Taliban’s Prime Minister, has previously criticized the international community, stating that little significant support has been provided for the development of alternative crops and the livelihoods of Afghan farmers.

In this context, Scott Smith, head of UNAMA’s political section in Kabul, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in combating drug production, noting that such collaboration is essential for Afghanistan’s future.

Challenges Faced by Afghan Farmers Following Opium Ban

According to UN reports, farmers in northern Afghanistan are experiencing severe challenges in securing their livelihoods since the opium cultivation ban. The agency has also warned that the economic pressures on rural communities have increased the urgency for immediate assistance and the creation of sustainable livelihoods.
