Afghanistan Sees Surge in Internet and SIM Card Usage Amid Telecom Expansion

The Taliban’s Ministry of Communications has announced that there are 32 million SIM cards active in Afghanistan, with 17 million individuals using the internet. The ministry emphasizes the importance of expanding infrastructure and ensuring cybersecurity.

Rising Internet Usage in Afghanistan

In a recent press conference, Enayatullah Alkozai, spokesman for the Taliban’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, shared new statistics indicating that approximately 32 million SIM cards are currently active in the country. Out of these, nearly 17 million people utilize internet services.

He also noted that about 10 million individuals now have access to 4G mobile services, a significant increase from just over 2 million prior to the Taliban’s takeover. This rise reflects advancements in telecommunications and internet service provision in Afghanistan.

Focus on Infrastructure Development and Cybersecurity

Alkozai emphasized that improved coverage of telecommunications networks across various regions has granted significant portions of Afghanistan access to internet services. He believes this expansion could pave the way for new economic and social opportunities in the country.

The Taliban’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology prioritizes cybersecurity, intending to exert control over the online space and prevent the dissemination of unauthorized content. They argue that developing internet infrastructure can facilitate improved online services, digital communications, and distance education.

However, experts stress that the actual access users have to the internet and the quality of services provided in different areas are key factors in assessing the digital communication landscape in Afghanistan.
