The United Nations Development Program has highlighted sustainable electricity access as a critical challenge in Afghanistan. This issue has significant and direct repercussions for health services, education, livelihoods, and economic growth. According to the report, approximately 40 to 42 percent of the country’s population is connected to the national electricity grid. However, it is essential to note that 90 percent of this access is concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural populations grappling with severe electricity shortages.
Efforts to expand the electricity grid to remote areas face considerable obstacles due to high consumption and infrastructural deficiencies. In this context, renewable energy has emerged as a viable option for powering these regions. Installing renewable energy systems in schools and health centers, along with implementing community-based financial models, could enhance the sustainability of these initiatives.
In certain areas, surplus electricity is sold to nearby homes and shops to cover maintenance costs. A successful example of this initiative is the renewable energy supply to women’s markets, which allows business owners to operate longer hours with less disruption from power outages.
The United Nations Development Program has emphasized that renewable energy can improve health and education services, create jobs, and bolster livelihoods, moving Afghanistan from resilience to economic revival. The country is heavily reliant on imported electricity, sourcing about 80 percent of its energy needs from neighboring countries, primarily from Central Asia, including Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. This dependence, combined with unequal access to electricity, heightens the vulnerability of Afghanistan’s electricity network, making it essential to develop domestic production and utilize renewable energy in rural and remote areas.
