According to a United Nations Development Programme report, only 42% of Afghanistan’s population has access to electricity, largely due to infrastructural challenges that hinder expansion to remote areas.
Access to reliable electricity remains one of the fundamental challenges in Afghanistan, with significant implications for healthcare, education, livelihoods, and economic growth. The report indicates that approximately 40 to 42 percent of the country’s population is connected to the national electricity grid; however, it is important to note that 90 percent of this access is concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural populations heavily disadvantaged in terms of electricity supply.
Expanding the electricity network to remote areas faces numerous challenges due to high consumption and infrastructure issues. In this context, renewable energy has emerged as a viable option for providing electricity in these regions. Installing renewable energy systems in schools and healthcare facilities, alongside implementing financial models based on community ownership, could enhance the sustainability of these initiatives.
In certain areas, excess electricity is sold to nearby homes and shops to cover maintenance costs. A successful example of this is the provision of renewable electricity to women’s markets, enabling business owners to operate longer hours and experience fewer power outages.
The UNDP has emphasized that renewable energy can improve healthcare and educational services, create jobs, and strengthen livelihoods, steering Afghanistan from mere resilience towards economic revival. The country is heavily reliant on imported electricity, sourcing about 80% of its needs from neighboring countries, primarily from Central Asian nations such as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. This import dependency, combined with uneven electricity access, has increased the vulnerability of Afghanistan’s power network. Consequently, advancing domestic production and utilizing renewable energy in rural and remote areas appears essential.
