Short Link:Officials from the Taliban in Panjshir Province have announced that since the beginning of the fiscal year 1405 (2023), nearly 20,000 carats of emeralds from the region have been sold through auctions, generating over $424,000.

While the Taliban label this initiative as part of their campaign to exploit the country’s mineral resources, the extraction and sale of these minerals have sparked a wave of sharp criticism. Political opposition parties and economic experts have described this practice as an organized plunder of national resources. They have warned both domestic and foreign companies about the lack of transparency surrounding the management of these revenues.
In addition to these concerns, local residents are lamenting that none of the substantial profits are being allocated to developing infrastructure, public services, or creating jobs in Panjshir. Experts assert that without oversight from independent organizations, this situation could lead to the squandering of critical resources for future generations in Afghanistan.
