Short Link:

Nomadic Invasion Strains Afghan Farmers Amid Drought and Economic Collapse

Field reports from the First Hesa Behsud district in Maidan Wardak province and Jaghori in Ghazni province reveal that the unchecked and coordinated early arrival of nomadic groups in agricultural areas and private pastures has caused severe damage to local farmers.

Local Farmers Face Unprecedented Challenges

In recent weeks, large groups of nomads have intentionally driven their herds into cultivated fields, grasslands, and orchards, leading to widespread destruction of crops. Local farmers have expressed that any peaceful protests they attempt are met with violent responses, including armed threats and bullying. This situation in Jaghori, a district already grappling with severe drought and unprecedented drops in groundwater levels, has completely disrupted the income streams for rural families, pushing the local economy to the brink of collapse.

Residents accuse the Taliban administration of facilitating the nomads through logistical and legal support while showing indifference to the destruction of private property. Analysts believe that leveraging these longstanding land disputes at a time when crops have just begun to yield results is a strategy aimed at wearing down local farmers and forcing them into absolute poverty and involuntary displacement.

Meanwhile, local influential figures, in the absence of independent judicial institutions, have issued urgent calls to the international community and human rights organizations. They urge immediate intervention to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe and the risk of violent social clashes in central Afghanistan.
