Taliban Target Shia Community in Kabul with Property Destruction and Displacement

Yemen attack

Reports from western Kabul indicate a growing trend of property destruction and asset confiscation targeting the Shia community by the Taliban. Experts believe these actions are aimed at exacerbating poverty and engineering demographic changes.

Destruction of Property and Forced Displacements in Dasht-e Barchi

According to local reports, a new wave of residential property destruction and organized displacements has begun in western Kabul, particularly in the Dasht-e Barchi area. Local sources have reported that individuals affiliated with the Taliban, operating under the guise of “local engineers,” are demolishing the facades of homes, doors, and windows of residents.

This destruction primarily occurs in areas lacking any urban development plans. Concurrently, reports from the Omid Sabz neighborhood, also known as Haji Nabi Township, reveal armed Taliban personnel entering residential homes, imprisoning owners, and looting their properties.

Economic Strain and Demographic Engineering

Economic experts believe that these actions are intentionally designed to undermine the financial stability and worsen poverty among the Shia and Hazara communities. The destruction and insecurity surrounding housing and land—fundamental assets of families—diminish the economic value of these properties and decimate citizens’ investments.

Moreover, the invasion of homes and theft of cash assets significantly reduces household liquidity, halting local business operations and investments. Additionally, the transformation of residential spaces into livestock enclosures severely affects the psychological security of original homeowners.

Analysts: A Targeted Program for Creating Poverty

Analysts argue that these actions extend beyond arbitrary policing and represent a deliberate program aimed at impoverishing the community. They assert that the economic pressure on the Shia population has reached a critical level, with the goal of restricting opportunities for economic development, education, and advancement.
