Abdulhaq Watiq, head of the General Directorate of Intelligence of the caretaker government, warned about the influence of social media on ISIS activities during the SCO Plus conference in Samarkand.

Social Media’s Impact on ISIS Activities

Abdulhaq Watiq, the head of the General Directorate of Intelligence of the caretaker government, spoke at the inaugural Security Dialogue Conference of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization titled ‘SCO Plus’, held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. He highlighted the role of social media in facilitating the operations of ISIS.

During this meeting, which included representatives from 24 countries and five international organizations, Watiq stated that ISIS utilizes platforms like Telegram and TikTok for communication, fundraising, and promoting extremist ideologies.

Key Challenges in the Fight Against Terrorism

Watiq also identified the lack of cooperation from major tech companies with the caretaker government as a significant challenge, claiming that this situation has created an environment conducive to the increased activities of ISIS. He noted the difficulties in tracking and dismantling ISIS’s technical infrastructure as an ongoing issue.

The Taliban intelligence chief emphasized that this group poses a serious threat to both regional and global security, mentioning the civilian casualties resulting from their attacks. The ‘SCO Plus’ security conference took place on November 5 and 6, with the aim of enhancing regional coordination to combat terrorism.
