The French Interior Minister announced the start of technical discussions with the Taliban regarding the repatriation of Afghan refugees. This decision has sparked significant concerns among the Afghan community residing in France.

Technical Talks on Afghan Refugee Repatriation

Laurent Nunez, the French Interior Minister, reported the initiation of “technical discussions” with officials from the Taliban-led interim government. The goal of these talks is to create pathways for the return of Afghan refugees who are currently living illegally in France.

Cooperation with Other Nations to Facilitate Repatriation

In remarks made in the French parliament, the minister indicated that France is striving to streamline the process for the repatriation of these individuals, an effort similar to actions taken by Germany. He emphasized that despite the non-recognition of the Taliban regime, France is joining around 20 other EU member states that are advocating for the expedited return of undocumented and criminal refugees to Afghanistan.

Human Rights Concerns and the Afghan Migrant Stance

This decision by France has led to a wave of anxiety among Afghan migrants in the country as well as among human rights advocates. Refugees have expressed fears concerning their residency status and are urging for independent and individual assessments of their cases based on international law.

Criticism of Normalizing Relations with the Taliban

Lea Balage El Marigi, a representative of the Green Party in the French parliament, criticized this approach, labeling it a step towards normalizing relations with a regime that she claims perpetrates “gender apartheid.” Her remarks reflect deep concerns regarding human rights conditions in Afghanistan and the repercussions of decisions made by European nations.
