Afghan Women’s Organization Calls for Inclusive Political Process in Open Letter to UN

The Afghan Women’s Organization has sent an open letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and members of the Security Council, calling for the establishment of an inclusive and legitimate political process that ensures the effective participation of women and all social and political groups in Afghanistan. The letter also emphasizes the need for an enhanced role of UNAMA, the appointment of a special representative for the UN, and guarantees for women’s equal involvement in the political process.

An Open Letter Signed by Hundreds of Afghan Women

This organization stated that the letter was prepared after consultations with 30 organizations and 450 women from within Afghanistan, reflecting the collective views of Afghan women activists and advocates. According to this organization, the aim of this initiative is to strengthen the participation of women and other segments of society in determining Afghanistan’s political future.

Request to UNAMA for Regular Dialogue with Various Groups

The letter urges the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) to establish a systematic, targeted, and sustainable mechanism for dialogue with various women’s groups, democratic forces, civil society representatives, and other political stakeholders both inside and outside Afghanistan. The authors of the letter emphasized that these dialogues must be pursued continuously and effectively.

Emphasis on Genuine Women’s Participation

The signatories of the letter stated that interactions with women and social groups should not be limited to symbolic meetings and consultations; instead, there should be a provision for their meaningful, impactful, and real participation in decision-making processes that shape Afghanistan’s political future.

Call for Implementation of UN Recommendations

The letter also stresses the importance of implementing the recommendations from the UN’s independent assessment regarding Afghanistan, appointing a specific representative for the country, establishing clear criteria for evaluating progress in the political process, increasing transparency and accountability within UNAMA, and ensuring the full and equal presence of women at all stages of the political process.

Ongoing Concerns about the Status of Women in Afghanistan

The Afghan Women’s Organization’s request comes at a time when restrictions on women’s participation in political, educational, social, and professional arenas remain a major concern for international organizations, human rights groups, and women’s rights advocates.
