During the inauguration of the Telecommunications and Information Technology Exhibition in Kabul, Taliban government officials highlighted recent achievements in developing telecommunications infrastructure and advancing digital governance initiatives across the country. Executives stressed that efforts to modernize administrative systems and enhance technological services are ongoing.

Abdul Salama Hanifi, the Deputy Administrative Head of the Taliban’s Prime Minister’s Office, stated during the event that significant progress has been made in the telecommunications sector recently. He noted that nearly 400 new telecommunications sites have been installed and activated in underserved and remote regions. Hanifi added that the process of digitizing and systematizing administrative structures to facilitate public service delivery is being pursued vigorously.

Focus on Regional Competitiveness and Public Access

Meanwhile, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Deputy Economic Head of the Prime Minister’s Office, announced that the planning undertaken aims to gradually position Afghanistan to compete in the technology sector with other regional countries. He claimed that following recent political changes, large areas in rural regions previously deprived of telecommunications services are now covered by communication networks.

Structural Challenges in the Path to Digital Transformation

The officials’ remarks about technological advancement come at a time when the telecommunications and technology sectors in Afghanistan face fundamental obstacles. Experts emphasize that severe infrastructural restrictions, economic challenges, low-quality internet services, and unequal access among residents in various provinces are among the primary challenges hindering the full realization of electronic governance in the country.
