Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, condemned the attack by an Afghan migrant on the National Guard in Washington and warned against Donald Trump’s policy of suspending immigration from Afghanistan, emphasizing that the burden of this individual crime should not fall on the entire Afghan community.

Stéphane Dujarric criticizes Trump’s policy of ‘targeting an entire community’

Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, reacted to Donald Trump’s decision to suspend immigration from developing countries following the shooting in Washington, calling for the responsibility of the attack by an Afghan migrant on two members of the National Guard not to be placed on the entire Afghan nation.

Dujarric, while strongly condemning the attack in Washington D.C., also emphasized the United Nations’ explicit opposition to Trump’s statements about targeting an entire community due to a crime committed by one of its members.

The United Nations spokesperson stated:
”It is very important that an entire community does not suffer as a result of the actions of a single individual.”

In response to reporters’ questions, he noted that while leaders have the right and responsibility to determine who is allowed to enter their countries, this right should not become a tool for collective punishment.

Suspension of Afghan migration after the deadly attack

The attack in Washington occurred last Wednesday, where two members of the National Guard were shot near the White House. The suspect in the attack, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan migrant, was arrested immediately. Trump later announced the death of a National Guard soldier due to injuries sustained during the attack.

Following Trump’s announcement that the suspect entered the U.S. from Afghanistan in 2021, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services suspended processing all immigration requests from Afghan nationals indefinitely on Thursday; a move that provoked Dujarric’s protest.
