UNICEF has issued a warning that by 2027, over four million Afghan children will suffer from severe malnutrition. This crisis is driven by poverty and a lack of parental awareness regarding proper nutrition.

UNICEF’s Warning on Child Malnutrition in Afghanistan

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) released a report forecasting that by 2027, more than four million children in Afghanistan will require urgent medical care due to severe malnutrition. The research indicates that the number of children facing a critical situation is expected to exceed one million.

On Thursday, October 15, UNICEF highlighted that this alarming situation has arisen from families’ inability to provide nutritious food, exacerbated by the country’s economic poverty. A young mother from Laghman province shared her financial struggles, noting that the lack of access to healthy food has left her child severely malnourished.

Health experts in Afghanistan’s eastern provinces, including Nangarhar, identify a lack of job opportunities and insufficient income as primary factors contributing to this health crisis among children. Dr. Ahmaduddin Majarij, a former professor at Kabul Medical University, suggested that using affordable food options and maintaining adequate spacing between births could help prevent children from becoming malnourished.

To address this crisis, UNICEF is continuing cash assistance programs for underprivileged families across the country. The international organization emphasizes the necessity of promoting healthy nutrition and educating parents on appropriate dietary practices.
