UNICEF reports that thousands of children in Afghanistan and Pakistan are being denied access to polio vaccinations due to significant challenges, including armed conflicts and weak health systems.
On World Polio Day, UNICEF announced that many children in Afghanistan and Pakistan are still unvaccinated against this debilitating disease. The international organization stated on October 24 that despite a staggering 99.9% reduction in polio cases since 1988, numerous obstacles remain in ensuring the immunization of children.
UNICEF highlighted that armed conflicts, underfunded public health systems, and budget shortfalls are major hurdles in the fight against polio. The organization emphasizes that environmental challenges and misinformation regarding vaccine exemptions have further hindered the timely administration of booster doses.
Currently, UNICEF points out that Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only countries in the world where the wild polio virus has not been completely eradicated. Despite this, UNICEF facilitates the immunization of over 400 million children globally each year, but existing challenges impede comprehensive coverage of this process.
UNICEF stresses the need to strengthen health networks, allocate new financial resources, and combat rumors to protect children’s health against permanent paralysis. These measures could significantly improve vaccination rates in countries that continue to face serious challenges.
