According to OCHA, 70% of the $1.7 billion humanitarian aid budget for Afghanistan remains unfunded, leaving 21.9 million people in urgent need of assistance.
A recent report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) highlights that by the end of August 2026, only $513 million of the $1.7 billion necessary for humanitarian aid has been secured. This indicates that $1.2 billion is still without funding.
The report reveals that between January and August 2026, UN humanitarian partners have provided at least one type of humanitarian service to 9.3 million people in Afghanistan. Among these, 5.1 million individuals have received assistance primarily due to food security needs, underscoring the country’s ongoing nutritional crisis.
Currently, 21.9 million people in Afghanistan are in desperate need of immediate assistance. Key sectors requiring support include food security, agriculture, healthcare, and access to clean drinking water. The success of the relief efforts is heavily reliant on securing adequate and sustainable financial resources.
OCHA has also stressed the importance of ensuring equal access for women and girls to humanitarian assistance. The organization noted the effective contributions of female Afghan aid workers in delivering aid and highlighted the need for appropriate methods to identify the true needs of the population.
