UNICEF has issued a stark warning in its latest report, indicating that the water crisis in Afghanistan has dramatically worsened, posing a serious threat to the health of children and families. The organization has urged member countries to cooperate in managing Afghanistan’s water resources.

UNICEF’s Warning on Afghanistan’s Water Crisis

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has raised alarms about the escalating water shortage in Afghanistan, which is putting the lives of the country’s children at significant risk. The organization identifies climate change, increasing public needs, budget deficits, and weak infrastructure as the primary contributors to this ongoing crisis.

Tajuddin Uwais, UNICEF’s representative in Afghanistan, emphasized on Saturday (October 23) that excessive extraction of groundwater and poor management of water resources have exacerbated the situation. He noted that the repercussions of this crisis directly impact the health of children and families, creating serious obstacles to their access to safe drinking water.

International Efforts to Address the Water Crisis

Uwais called on member countries, funding agencies, and international financial institutions to participate in a consultative meeting held by UNICEF to assess the water crisis in Afghanistan. He underscored the importance of international collaboration in addressing this issue.

The scarcity of water resources has become a fundamental challenge for Afghanistan. Coupled with environmental conflicts, this problem has raised serious concerns regarding its detrimental effects on the livelihoods and health of children.
