The Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan confirmed with this announcement that the country has signed a new contract for the transfer of electricity to Afghanistan.
According to the Interfax news agency, this contract for 2026 was signed after the discussion between Johrabek Mirzayev, the Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan, and Abdul Bari Omar, the Executive Director of the Breshna company, between the Uzbekenergo company of Uzbekistan and the Breshna company under the control of the Taliban.
However, it is still unclear how much electricity Uzbekistan will export to Afghanistan next year. This comes as in the previous contract signed in 2019, Uzbekistan promised to export up to 6 billion kilowatts of electricity to Afghanistan every year for ten years.
This new agreement comes at a time when Afghanistan continues to have a severe dependence on foreign energy sources. Afghanistan imports most of its electricity needs from neighboring countries, and only a very small amount of electricity is produced domestically.
Continuous electricity supply from regional countries, including Uzbekistan, is considered vital for Afghanistan’s infrastructure and essential services.
