The Continued Dominance of Afghan Residents among EU Asylum Seekers

Recent statistics published by the European Union’s refugee agency reveal that due to ongoing challenges, Afghan citizens remain the largest demographic of asylum seekers in EU member states, Norway, and Switzerland. According to this official report, Afghan refugees accounted for 37,419 asylum applications, marking the highest international demand for protection and reflecting the persistent wave of migration from the country.

Germany: The Main Attraction and Primary Destination for Afghan Refugees

The findings in this statistical report indicate that Germany continues to be recognized as the most favored and primary destination for Afghan migrants in Europe. Based on the provided figures, four out of ten Afghan citizens who apply for asylum in European countries choose Germany as their final destination. This high concentration has resulted in 37% of all registered asylum cases in German immigration offices being attributed to Afghan nationals. However, Germany’s decision to block Afghan migrants has sparked outrage and despair among many advocates.

Relative Decline in Overall Asylum Applications and Geographic Distribution

This information is released at a time when, during the first six months of 2026, over 321,000 asylum applications from various countries worldwide were registered in the EU, Norway, and Switzerland. A closer look at these figures shows a decrease in overall applications compared to the same period last year. Nevertheless, France, Italy, and Spain, alongside Germany, have received the highest volume of asylum requests from nationals of various countries, particularly those affected by regional crises. The situation is further complicated by the sharp rise in Afghan expulsions from Pakistan, raising humanitarian concerns in the region.
