The recent decision by the Taliban to suspend operations at seven private universities and revoke the licenses of two educational institutions has raised concerns among students about their academic future.

Suspension and License Revocation of Universities by the Taliban

On August 8, the Taliban government suspended the operations of seven private universities and revoked the licenses of two additional institutions. This decision was made by the Ministry of Higher Education due to administrative violations and the presence of “phantom students.”

Student Concerns and Educational Challenges

Students have voiced their worries regarding the recent Taliban decision, seeking suitable solutions to prevent harm to their education. One student from the private university “Payam” expressed, “What will happen to the students? Will it be considered that they have studied up to this point?”

Reasons for Suspension and Oversight by the Ministry of Higher Education

Ziaullah Hashimi, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Higher Education, did not directly address the raised questions but indicated that educational institutions had been advised multiple times prior to this decision. He emphasized that the assessment of universities should be conducted within the framework of the law.

Current Status of Private Universities in Afghanistan

Currently, there are 120 officially operating private universities and institutions in Afghanistan. However, it remains unclear how many students are enrolled in these entities. Many students opt for private universities after failing to gain admission to public institutions.

Overall Impact on the Education Sector

The Taliban’s recent decision highlights the ongoing challenges within Afghanistan’s higher education sector. Over the past four years, the ruling regime has imposed restrictions on girls regarding education, affecting the future of learning in the country.
