EU’s Foreign Policy Chief Reiterates Stance on Taliban Engagement and Human Rights

The European Union’s foreign policy chief emphasized that engagement with the Taliban does not equate to granting them legitimacy, while also stressing the need to respect human rights.

EU Engagement with the Taliban

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, stated that the institution does not view its engagement with the Taliban as an acknowledgment of their legitimacy. She reiterated the EU’s ongoing support for the people of Afghanistan, asserting that interactions must align with the union’s core interests and values.

Humanitarian Aid to Afghanistan

Recently, the European Union donated €10 million to the humanitarian fund for Afghanistan. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) expressed gratitude for this contribution, stating that these resources will help meet the needs of millions in the country.

Conditions for Recognizing the Taliban

Kaja Kallas also noted that any moves toward recognizing the Taliban would depend on progress in meeting specific criteria. These criteria include adherence to international commitments, preventing terrorist activities, and establishing an inclusive government.

Concerns About the Situation in Afghanistan

Over the past five years, the EU has provided more than €2 billion in assistance to Afghanistan, focusing on humanitarian, health, and education sectors. The union has expressed concern regarding the deteriorating economic situation in Afghanistan, highlighting that half of the population is in need of humanitarian aid.

Human Rights and the Status of Women

Kallas emphasized the urgent need to end violations against women and girls’ rights, presenting the fulfillment of United Nations Security Council standards as a pathway to achieving stability and peace in Afghanistan.
