Hamid Karzai Reveals Restrictions Under Taliban Rule and Advocates for Girls’ Education

Hamid Karzai, the former President of Afghanistan, stated in a recent interview that he cannot leave his home without permission from the Taliban. He also emphasized the importance of education for girls and the need for women’s involvement in the workforce.

Hamid Karzai: I Cannot Leave My Home Without Taliban Permission

In a new interview, Hamid Karzai pointed out the restrictions on his life, revealing that he cannot leave his residence in Kabul without the consent of Taliban authorities. These comments were made during a podcast with Mishal Husain from Bloomberg News.

When asked if he could leave his house, Karzai responded, “No, no, I cannot go out without the permission of the Taliban.” He emphasized that he can only travel if allowed by the Taliban, who would then bear the responsibility for his safety.

3 Million Girls are Denied Education in Afghanistan

The former president also addressed the dire situation regarding girls’ education in Afghanistan, noting that nearly three million girls have been deprived of secondary education over the past five years. He reiterated his commitment to advocating for girls’ right to education.

Karzai mentioned that during his presidency, millions of girls were enrolled in schools and universities. He urged the Taliban to grant girls the right to education and women the opportunity to work, in order to gain international legitimacy.

Tense Relations Between the Taliban and Pakistan

He also highlighted the complex and strained relationship between the Taliban and Pakistan, stating, “These conflicts demonstrate that Pakistan cannot reach any agreement with any government in Afghanistan.” Karzai expressed hope for a change in Pakistan’s policies towards Afghanistan.

Political Views on Afghanistan-Pakistan Relations

Political expert Ghaws Janbaz believes that Pakistan continues to perpetuate its historical problems with Afghanistan and has made its relationship vulnerable through dual strategies. He argues that as long as Pakistan does not abandon these practices, relations between the two countries will not improve.
