Afghanistan Unveils Ambitious Five-Year Plan to Transform Electricity Sector

The caretaker government has announced the final approval of a five-year strategic plan for electricity development in the country; a significant initiative that focuses on domestic resources and includes the implementation of dozens of major projects in the energy production, transmission, and distribution sectors.

Five-Year Roadmap Approved for the Transformation of the Country’s Electricity Sector

Efforts to tackle the longstanding energy crisis and reduce reliance on electricity imports from neighboring countries have entered a new phase. Officials from the caretaker government have confirmed that Afghanistan’s five-year electricity development plan has been finalized after thorough evaluations and approval by the Economic Commission, chaired by Mawlavi Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, the group’s deputy for economic affairs. This comprehensive and strategic program is considered a foundational step toward bolstering the country’s economic, industrial, and social infrastructure. Focus on Rich Domestic Resources and Renewable Energy Production

According to details released from this development plan, twenty-five major electricity generation projects will be implemented using the country’s natural and internal resources across various locations. These projects will encompass diverse sectors, including hydroelectric, solar, wind energy, and coal thermal stations. The current government aims to significantly boost domestic production by tapping into the existing natural potential of the region, advancing towards sustainable self-sufficiency.

Upgrading Transmission Lines and Constructing New Substations

Another aspect of this comprehensive plan is dedicated to developing transit networks and distribution substations. This program includes the completion of thirteen ongoing repair and engineering projects in the transmission line sector, alongside the initiation of twenty-three entirely new projects. Moreover, to address challenges related to voltage drops and network stability, the government plans to complete twenty-one previous unfinished projects and launch twenty-one new projects aimed at constructing and enhancing equipped electricity substations.

Expanding Distribution Networks and Facilitating Energy Access for Residents

Extensive planning has also occurred in the area of directly serving customers and expanding distribution networks. According to the approved document, thirty-four major and sub-projects in the distribution sector are anticipated, with the primary goal of enhancing access for residents, especially in underserved and remote districts, to a nationwide electricity network. Officials emphasize that the comprehensive implementation of these support and development packages will fundamentally improve and strengthen energy distribution infrastructure across the country. Concerns like the current economic challenges are also highlighted broadly in discussions, such as the World Bank report on Afghan economic growth in relation to poverty.
