Recent reports from Afghanistan indicate that the Taliban are detaining and subjecting men to violence for their wives’ failure to adhere to hijab regulations. This situation is exacerbating social tensions.

Detention of Men Due to Family Hijab Violations

Recent accounts from Afghanistan suggest that the Taliban are punishing men for violations of hijab by their female family members through arrest and physical violence. Local residents report that members of this group beat and imprison male heads of families for what they term “hijab violations.”

A young girl in Kabul has claimed that her brother was beaten by the Taliban for sitting in the front seat of a vehicle without a mask at a checkpoint. Additionally, a woman in Takhar province has stated that after undergoing surgery, she faced harsh treatment from morality enforcers for not wearing proper clothing and was subsequently imprisoned; her brother-in-law was also subjected to violence in this incident.

Social and Familial Pressures

In another incident in Dai Kundi province, following the closure of women’s salons and the continuation of clandestine activities at home, one family member was detained by the Taliban and held in custody for five days. Such actions are increasing pressures on family relationships and social conditions within the country.

Despite attempts to obtain an official comment, Saif-ul-Islam Kheibar, spokesperson for the Taliban’s Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, has not responded to inquiries regarding these matters. According to guidelines released in the solar year 1401, a male guardian whose family member violates hijab rules may face penalties such as summons and imprisonment.

Human Rights Violations and Negative Impacts

These actions come at a time when, under international law, no one should be punished for the actions of others. The Taliban’s resurgence and the rollback of previous regulations have imposed significant pressures on society and daily life for the country’s residents.
