Iranian Diplomat Leads Delegation to Kabul for Joint Consular Talks

Vahid Jalalzadeh, Iran’s Deputy for Consular Affairs, Parliamentary Affairs, and Iranians Abroad at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has arrived in Kabul leading a high-ranking delegation to hold the fifth meeting of the joint consular commission between the two countries and to engage with government officials.

Official Visit of Iranian Diplomat to Kabul

Relations pertaining to borders, legal matters, and consular affairs between Kabul and Tehran have entered a new phase of direct discussions, prompted by the visit of a senior diplomatic official from the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Afghan capital. Vahid Jalalzadeh arrived at Kabul International Airport on Tuesday, July 22, at the head of an official and high-ranking diplomatic delegation, where he was welcomed by relevant officials.

Fifth Meeting of the Joint Consular Commission

The Iranian Embassy in Kabul officially announced that the primary aim of this visit is to facilitate and advance the fifth meeting of the joint consular commission between Iran and Afghanistan. This round of bilateral talks is expected to cover a wide range of topics, including the legal status of Afghan migrants and refugees in Iran, enhancing border cooperation, combating human trafficking and drug smuggling, and easing the transit process for transport drivers. Jalalzadeh is set to participate not only in this commission but also to meet with several senior officials of the interim government to discuss mutual security and economic concerns. Notably, there is a growing interest in strengthening economic ties between the two nations.

Continuing Diplomatic Activities amid Challenges for Applicants

This diplomatic event takes place during a time when, following the establishment of the current government in Afghanistan, the Islamic Republic of Iran has remained one of the few countries to keep its active embassy in Kabul and four other consular missions in Herat, Mazar-i-Sharif, Jalalabad, and Kandahar operational. Nonetheless, in recent years, the provision of consular services, particularly the process of issuing tourism and business visas for Afghan residents, has faced numerous limitations, including strict conditions and specific quotas. It is anticipated that the Afghan delegation at this meeting will advocate for increased facilitation to address these issues and streamline the bureaucratic processes for Afghan applicants.
