Officials from the Taliban in Badakhshan report that an armed group attacked the center of the Yiftal Payin district; a strike that, according to sources, temporarily forced the Taliban to lose control of the area. This incident has prompted reactions from Taliban officials and varying analyses from experts regarding the security situation in Afghanistan.
Local officials from the Taliban in Badakhshan announced that on the evening of Friday, an armed group launched an attack on the Yiftal Payin district center. According to Taliban officials, security forces managed to regain control of the situation after several hours of conflict.
Ehsanullah Kamgar, the spokesperson for the Taliban’s provincial command in Badakhshan, informed the media that the assailants used the absence of several senior security officials to stage their overnight attack on the district’s command center. He mentioned that Taliban forces responded quickly, repelling the attackers and restoring control to the area.
A source within the Taliban government, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed to the media that the armed group succeeded in taking control of the Yiftal Payin district center for a short duration. Additionally, several local sources reported that the attackers seized some weapons and equipment belonging to the Taliban forces.
Following the incident, videos and images circulated on social media showing the presence of armed individuals in the Yiftal Payin district market. The footage also features several vehicles and equipment attributed to the Taliban. However, no independent source has yet verified the authenticity of these images and videos.
Taliban sources have reported that during the operation, a number of armed individuals were killed while others were apprehended. According to these sources, search operations are ongoing to identify and capture other individuals associated with this attack. The identities of the attackers have not been officially disclosed, but some media outlets and activists have referred to them as part of a group called the Homeland Warriors.
In the wake of the assault, Fasiuddin Fetrat, the Taliban’s military chief, traveled to Badakhshan. He stated that the armed groups lack the capability to confront Taliban forces and merely exist under different names.
This event is significant as it marks the first time in nearly five years that an armed group has managed to temporarily seize control of a district center. Military analyst Mohammad Naeem Ghayoor believes the recent events bear a striking resemblance to Taliban operations during the final years of the republic. He notes that the Taliban also started with small groups before gradually expanding their reach. Ajmal Omar Shinwari, another political and military analyst, shares the sentiment that the current conditions in Afghanistan promote the proliferation of guerrilla warfare. He points to internal divisions, corruption, and dissatisfaction within segments of the Taliban as contributing factors to such movements.
The Taliban have consistently claimed to provide nationwide security in Afghanistan; however, the attack on the Yiftal Payin district center has once again brought the country’s security situation into sharp focus. While the Taliban view this attack as contained, opposing groups have repeatedly claimed responsibility for armed assaults against Taliban forces in recent years, a trend that continues to fuel discussions about the actual stability of security in Afghanistan. For instance, in response to growing unrest, the Taliban has launched a recruitment drive in Badakhshan to bolster their forces amidst rising internal strife.
