Afghanistan’s Healthcare Crisis: Patients’ Lives at Risk Due to Medical Shortages

incident

The lack of medical equipment and facilities in Afghanistan’s hospitals has put patients’ lives at risk. Both patients and medical staff express their concerns over this troubling situation.

Afghan Patients Face Life-threatening Conditions Due to Medical Shortages

The shortfall of medical resources and equipment in healthcare centers across remote provinces of Afghanistan has escalated into a serious crisis. Patients and healthcare workers in Paktia and Nangarhar provinces have voiced their worries, warning that the ongoing shortages jeopardize the lives of treatable patients.

Residents of the Chamkani district in Paktia and the Torkham area of Nangarhar report a lack of essential supplies such as oxygen and medication. According to them, low-income families are forced to purchase expensive medication from the open market and, in emergencies, transfer their patients to other locations.

The Impact of Equipment Shortages on Medical Staff and Patients

Dr. Zargoon Shinwari, head of the Doctors’ Union in the Hesarak district of Nangarhar, notes that despite having specialist doctors, inadequate equipment and power outages during cloudy days hinder the work of healthcare professionals. Moreover, similar challenges are evident in other provinces like Ghazni, Paktika, Badghis, and Helmand.

Lack of Response from the Ministry of Public Health and Expert Warnings

Media inquiries directed at the Taliban’s Ministry of Public Health regarding this issue have gone unanswered, with the ministry yet to respond to any questions. In contrast, the capital and several major cities in the country are equipped with better facilities.

Dr. Hanif Tasal from the Indira Gandhi Children’s Specialized Hospital in Kabul warns that the absence of critical equipment, such as ventilators and intensive care units, threatens the lives of patients who are otherwise salvageable.

Decline in Foreign Aid and Pressure on Afghanistan’s Healthcare System

A report released by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the 14th month of 1404 highlights that the decrease in foreign aid is placing tremendous pressure on Afghanistan’s vulnerable healthcare system. Additionally, the health coordination group previously warned that a budget deficit might lead to the closure of at least 422 primary healthcare centers in 1404, depriving over three million people of medical services.
