The expansion of gold mining in Badakhshan has created thousands of job opportunities. However, these activities have raised serious concerns about environmental destruction and the depletion of natural resources.
The gold mining efforts in Badakhshan province have provided a source of employment and income for thousands of individuals. This surge in activity is particularly noted at the “Shiva” gold mine, located just 50 kilometers northeast of Faizabad.
According to a World Bank report, numerous contracts for mining have been signed in Afghanistan since 2021, with the sector experiencing an average annual growth rate of between 25% and 30%.
The Taliban’s Ministry of Mines and Petroleum has announced that efforts to regulate and monitor mining activities in Badakhshan are being intensified. This measure aims to curb excessive mining and protect the environment.
Despite the job benefits, there are significant concerns regarding the destruction of rivers and arable land. A local farmer reported that the water from the river has become unusable since mining activities began.
Experts stress that the rapid extraction of natural resources must occur alongside the respect for local rights and environmental standards. Failure to do so could result in serious problems for the livelihoods of local populations.
