In the provinces of Badakhshan and Takhar, numerous residents have expressed strong criticism of the current gold extraction methods. They argue that unprofessional mining practices and rampant digging have inflicted serious damage on the environment and polluted water resources. They contend that this situation has completely destroyed farmland and rural roads.

Issues with Transportation and Health Services

Local residents are complaining about the difficulties faced by heavy vehicles due to the deteriorating roads. This has made it challenging for patients to reach health centers. Furthermore, local Taliban officials in Badakhshan have acknowledged that the passage of heavy machinery has contributed to road damage.

Silence from the Ministry of Mines

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum has refrained from commenting on the situation. Mining experts believe that the lack of transparent regulatory mechanisms and ambiguity in contracts increases the risk of corruption and misuse of public assets.

Protests and Public Demands

Public protests regarding this issue have a long history. In January and February of last year, demonstrations in the districts of Shahrak Badakhshan and Chah Ab Takhar turned violent, resulting in civilian casualties as reported by UNAMA. Despite government officials announcing the cancellation of licenses for dozens of companies, residents continue to insist on their demands, including sharing in revenue, constructing schools and hospitals, and compensating for damages suffered.
