Short Link:In an urgent joint meeting of governors and security officials from five northern and northwestern provinces, including Balkh, Sar-e Pol, Jawzjan, Samangan, and Faryab, held in Sar-e Pol, there was a firm emphasis on the unconditional implementation of orders from the Taliban leader and the complete abolition of all legal codes inherited from the previous republic system.
Mohammad Yousuf Wafa, the powerful Taliban governor in Balkh, explicitly stated during the meeting that the primary basis for legislation is solely the decrees issued from Kandahar, and all officials are obligated to comply. Additionally, according to a new resolution from this meeting, the scope of freedom of expression has been further restricted, with any form of criticism or dissent against government decisions considered negative propaganda against the regime. Offenders will be referred to military courts without exception.
Moreover, Taliban officials have issued a new directive stating that mosque imams and religious school leaders are now required to use their platforms to encourage the public to pledge allegiance to the Taliban leader. Political activists have viewed this move as an attempt to forcibly legitimize the regime among a community already facing severe restrictions and crippling poverty. Concerns about the implications of such moves have been echoed in reports regarding the escalating repressiveness faced by Afghan citizens.
Furthermore, in an effort to control radical forces and prevent internal divisions, leaving the country under the pretext of jihad or joining other militant groups without written permission from the Taliban leader has been declared prohibited. Analysts believe that the intensification of these repressive and policing policies amid a severe unemployment crisis will exacerbate the atmosphere of oppression in northern Afghanistan. Additionally, there are growing concerns related to potential territorial agreements, as highlighted in discussions surrounding secret land deals involving the Taliban.
