The spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs has announced an expansion of engagement with the Taliban, focusing on humanitarian aid. India plans to enhance its diplomatic representation in Kabul in 2025.
Randheer Jaiswal, the spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, stated that the country’s interaction with the Taliban is continuously expanding. Jaiswal emphasized that humanitarian assistance and developmental cooperation are central to this engagement. He also noted a significant increase in India’s interactions with Afghanistan over the past year.
He referenced the presence of Anand Prakash, who heads the Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran division in the Ministry, at an event celebrating the Taliban’s return to power, highlighting that Prakash attended on behalf of the Indian government.
India has a long-standing relationship with the Afghan people, and current interactions encompass diplomatic discussions, humanitarian support, and developmental projects. Jaiswal clarified that the nature and level of New Delhi’s engagement with Kabul will continue to be guided by these priorities.
The spokesperson also announced that in October 2025, India’s diplomatic representation in Kabul will be upgraded, with the technical mission transitioning back into an embassy. An acting head for the Indian embassy in Kabul has already been designated.
However, Jaiswal pointed out that this change does not signify an elevation of official relations between India and the Taliban. The increased engagement occurs amidst rising tensions between Kabul and Islamabad. Pakistan has accused both parties of supporting their armed opponents, allegations that have been denied by both sides.
