Kunar and Nuristan Residents Sound Alarm Over Illegal Logging Threats

Residents of Kunar and Nuristan have expressed deep concern over the illegal logging activities in their regions, emphasizing that these actions threaten both the local community and the environment. They are urging for immediate measures to protect the forests.

Concerns Over Deforestation in Kunar and Nuristan

Several residents from the provinces of Kunar and Nuristan have raised alarms regarding illegal logging, stating that this activity jeopardizes the livelihoods of local people. An anonymous resident from Nuristan reported, “Unfortunately, in certain areas, trees are being cut down indiscriminately, and the timber trade is thriving.”

This individual also noted that while Nuristan’s forests are considered valuable natural resources, recent years have seen significant damage due to unregulated tree cutting. They highlighted, “Nuristan is beautiful because of these forests, but now natural pests and wildfires are causing harm, and indiscriminate logging continues.”

Similar Situation in Kunar

The concerns about deforestation are not limited to Nuristan; residents near Kunar’s forests have voiced similar complaints. One local lamented that despite a ban on cutting down poplar and oak trees, there has been an increase in the logging of fruit-bearing trees like mulberries and walnuts.

They warned, “If this logging continues unchecked, we will soon lose access to fruits and the environmental benefits these trees provide.”

Government Measures and Environmental Experts

Taliban officials have stated that they have deployed a unit referred to as the ‘Green Team’ to prevent illegal logging. Meanwhile, environmental experts believe urgent and systematic actions are crucial for forest protection. Ahmad Javid Noor, an environmental expert, told Radio Free Europe, “If serious measures are not taken, the natural ecosystems of these areas will face even greater damage.”

He further cautioned that rampant deforestation could lead to soil erosion, increased flooding, and climate change. The concerns regarding the decline in forest cover and illegal timber trade highlight a serious crisis in Afghanistan’s natural resources.
