A recent report reveals that Afghan refugees in Italy are facing significant challenges related to employment, low wages, and social integration, persisting even for those with residency permits.
Findings from the Afghanistan Analysts Network indicate that Afghan refugees residing in Italy, despite obtaining residency documentation, grapple with fundamental barriers in employment, job security, and social cohesion.
The assessment highlights Italy’s role as a transit country to other European nations for many Afghan migrants. The Afghan population in Italy is projected to grow from around 4,000 individuals in 2011 to nearly 19,000 by 2025.
The city of Trieste is identified as one of the primary entry points for Afghan refugees, expected to host around 30,000 Afghan nationals from 2021 to 2026. However, the lives of these individuals are fraught with numerous challenges.
Fabrizio Focini, the author of the report, notes that Afghan migrants primarily work in agriculture, tourism, construction, and services. They face obstacles such as low wages, informal contracts, and the illegal practice of exploitation known as ‘caporalato.’
The report also references a horrific incident in June 2026, where four workers, including three Afghan refugees, were set on fire by unscrupulous employers. Despite a decrease in the acceptance rate of Afghan asylum seekers to 82% by 2025 and the implementation of stringent immigration laws in 2026, challenges persist, fueled by social networks and the search for better opportunities in countries like Germany and Austria.
