Decrease in Afghan Migrants to the UK Amid Tightening Immigration Laws

The UK Home Office has reported that Afghan nationals account for 13% of undocumented migrants, with their entries to the country decreasing by 37%. This comes amid stringent immigration laws making it increasingly difficult for new migrants to enter the UK.

Drop in Afghan Arrivals to the UK

The UK Home Office has revealed that Afghans make up 13% of undocumented migrants arriving by small boats. In an announcement made on August 27, the Home Office stated that over 33,000 migrants have illegally entered the UK by this means so far this year.

According to the ministry, the number of Afghans entering the UK has decreased by 37% compared to last year. Similarly, the inflow of Iranian nationals has also dropped by 17%. This decline in migrant arrivals is attributed to the UK’s cooperation with European countries to combat human trafficking.

Challenges Faced by Afghan Migrants in the UK

Several Afghan migrants residing in the UK have expressed facing new difficulties due to the tightening of immigration laws and potential deportations. One migrant, who wished to remain anonymous, told Radio Free Europe that the police are preparing to deport him to France.

Mohammad Ibrahim Khan, an immigration attorney in London, emphasized that deportations are carried out under an agreement between the UK and France, but asylum seekers are given the opportunity to prove their right to remain in the UK.

Obstacles to Citizenship and Acceptance

Another Afghan asylum seeker living in London highlighted the challenges in obtaining documentation and acceptance in the UK, stating he waited three years for his five-year residency permit. The stringent immigration laws have effectively closed nearly all legal pathways for Afghan migrants.

In March of this year, the UK government announced a halt to visa issuance for Afghan students, a move prompted by a surge in asylum requests from this demographic. Home Secretary Suella Braverman has indicated significant changes to the immigration acceptance process, including extending the duration for obtaining permanent residency from five years to ten.
