Recent reports indicate that the arrest of Afghan women by Taliban forces has increased due to various reasons, including not having a male guardian, attempting to gain an education, and other baseless accusations.
Although the exact number of imprisoned women in Afghanistan remains unknown, the head of Taliban prison affairs, under pressure from international organizations, has admitted that more than 1,800 women are currently in detention.
Some released women or their families have reported widespread abuse of young women in Taliban prisons. According to them, younger detainees are forced into marriage with Taliban members and are told that their “religious duty in the Islamic Emirate is to engage in Jihad Nikah.”
Additionally, women who resist are subjected to fabricated charges, psychological and physical torture, and even beatings. Reports suggest that psychological torture has led some women to commit suicide after their release. According to some human rights organizations, more than 160 Afghan women have taken their own lives due to these pressures.
According to leaked information, the increasing abuse of women by Taliban members has even caused concern within their judicial system. Taliban leader Sheikh Hibatullah Akhundzada has issued a directive warning his forces against multiple marriages, stating that such actions will have negative consequences.
These reports come as international organizations continue to express deep concern over human rights violations in Afghanistan, particularly the condition of women under Taliban rule. Calls for increasing diplomatic pressure on the Taliban to end these widespread abuses remain ongoing.
