The Taliban’s Ministry of Water and Energy has issued a warning regarding potential flooding on December 13 and 14 across 12 provinces in Afghanistan, including Herat, Kandahar, Balkh, and Helmand. The alert follows relatively heavy rainfall in the Harirud, Murghab, Helmand river basins as well as northern regions. Residents have been advised to avoid approaching rivers during this time.

The Taliban’s Ministry of Water and Energy released a formal announcement on social media, alerting the public of the risk of flooding due to anticipated heavy rainfall over the upcoming weekend.

Provinces and Areas at Risk

According to the announcement, flooding is expected in Herat, Ghor, Badghis, Samangan, Balkh, Jowzjan, Helmand, Urozgan, Zabul, Kandahar, Sar-e Pol, and Faryab on December 13 and 14, reflecting the impending inclement weather. Additionally, floods may occur in the Harirud, Murghab, and Helmand river basins, along with northern areas.

The Ministry of Water and Energy has urged individuals residing near these rivers to follow safety protocols. Residents are cautioned to keep their distance from rivers if water levels rise, and those living upstream are encouraged to alert communities downstream about the potential hazards associated with flooding.
